Choosing a college is a daunting task for any first-time student, but for LGBTQ students, it can be downright terrifying. A whopping 13.4% of LGBTQ high school students who report frequent verbal harassment plan on not attending college, and 20% of all currently enrolled college students report fearing for their physical safety due to their gender identity or sexual orientation. In response, many universities are taking steps to fight back for their most vulnerable students, but understanding what to look for in a school is still difficult.
Affordable Colleges created a guide to college for LGBTQ students to help with advocating for LGBTQ youth. The guide includes actionable strategies to assess a school on its inclusivity and programs to help make the transition to college easier for LGBTQ students.
Since weathering the rise and fall of some for-profit online colleges, distance education is now an accepted and important option for students who need to balance the responsibilities of work and family. Public and private colleges across the country understand that online classrooms have opened up access to students who may have thought college was out of reach. With a growing marketplace, however, prospective students now face the challenge of choosing a program that meets their needs.
Late last year, BestColleges.com surveyed over 300 administrators and 1,500 students to gain more insight into the online education experience. These surveys were used to create this 2017 Student Guide to Online Education. The report serves to help students:

CASA of Sonoma County is pleased to have the opportunity to be the official charity partner of the new 2017 IPA 10K Sebastopol provided by Destination Races. The race begins and ends in at the Barlow Event Center in Sebastopol on April 15th and some of the proceeds will be given to our program. Check this link out!
Many times we are asked: “I am too busy to be a CASA right now, but is there anything I can do to help? I would love to help CASA but cannot be a CASA volunteer right now.”
Well, this might be a good match for you. As a way to support the event, we are asked to provide them with volunteers and in return they will be willing to donate to CASA. It gives us an exciting opportunity for marketing, PR and fundraising. The more visual we are the more people know about us. And that means more awareness of foster youth and their needs.

For an abused or neglected foster child, a Court Appointed Special Advocate – CASA volunteer, is someone who listens, observes, and reports. Someone who speaks up for the child by reaching out to the professionals involved. A CASA is someone whose sole mission is to clear a path for the child as they travel through the complexities of an overburdened child welfare system.

CASA is a unique, one of a kind program in Sonoma County. We are a citizen-driven organization which is legally recognized by the Sonoma County Juvenile Court.
